Emergency X-ray: What it can—and can’t—show
What X-rays are great at: Finding fractures and dislocations, helping detect lung issues such as pneumonia, spotting certain bowel blockages and identifying swallowed objects. X-rays help medical professionals visualize dense structures, making bones and some chest findings appear clearly.
What X-rays are not best for: Many soft-tissue injuries, like torn ligaments or certain internal organ problems. For these, your care team may recommend an ultrasound (sound-wave imaging) or CT scan (computed tomography).
We’ll walk you through why another test may be safer or more helpful for you.
When to visit Victoria ER for an emergency X-ray
Come in now if you have:
- A possible fracture or dislocation after a fall, crash, or sports injury.
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or a deep, persistent cough.

Is an X-ray safe?
Medical X-rays use a low dose of radiation. We follow the “ALARA” principle—as low as reasonably achievable—so you get the clearest images with the least exposure.
Please let us know if you are or might be pregnant. We will then select the safest approach (e.g., shielding or a different test, if necessary).
What to expect during your visit
- Triage and exam.
We’ll start by listening to your concerns, reviewing your symptoms, checking vital signs, and examining the injured or painful area. - Imaging order.
If an X-ray is appropriate, we will explain the reason and answer any questions you may have. - The X-ray.
Most studies can be completed in just a few minutes. You may need more than one view. - Results and next steps.
A physician reviews the images on-site and discusses a plan, which may include splinting, pain control, advanced imaging, or follow-up care.
Most patients leave with a clear plan and printed or electronic instructions. If your condition needs more monitoring, we will keep you comfortable and safe.
How to prepare (if you have time)
Walk-ins are always welcome. If a caregiver is available, ask them to come with you.
Please bring a list of your medications and any known allergies. If you have past images or a recent imaging report, bring it on your phone or on paper. Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move aside or remove. Metal objects, like jewelry or belts, may need to be removed for a clear image.
Pediatric X-rays: What parents should know
We offer safe and compassionate pediatric emergency care and clinical services for children of all ages. Our team uses pediatric-friendly positioning and shielding when helpful. We explain each step before we take a picture. You can stay near your child during the study unless it’s unsafe for you or your child.
If a different test would be safer or more useful for a child’s problem, we will explain that and help you make an informed decision.
After the X-ray: Recovery and follow-up
An X-ray does not require recovery time. If you have a sprain or fracture, you may be discharged with a splint, wrap, sling or walking boot, along with clear aftercare instructions. Some injuries are not apparent on the first X-ray. If your pain continues, you may need to repeat the images, or undergo another test a few days later. We’ll explain what to watch for and when to come back right away.

How we choose the right test
Your clinician determines which imaging tests you need based on your medical history, symptoms, physical exam, and the mechanism of injury. If we suspect a complex fracture, joint instability, or complications inside the chest or abdomen, we may recommend a CT. For tendons, muscles, or ligaments, an ultrasound can provide more detail.
We prioritize patient safety and peace of mind. We weigh the benefits and risks of each imaging method, including exposure to ionizing radiation, and consider any contraindications before ordering a study.
Our goal is to provide the safest test possible that gives the answers you need and the high-quality care you deserve.
