Meet the EMTs of Victoria

Emergency care isn’t just dispensed at our facilities, sometimes it starts in the ambulance, on the way to our emergency center. And while nurses and physicians are the main providers of medical care in the emergency room, there’s a completely separate team of men and women who treat patients in the ambulance. Keep reading to hear more from Victoria EMTs for National EMS Week!

EMS, or Emergency Medical Services, teams identify wounds and conditions, stabilize and if necessary, treat patients on the way to emergency centers or before emergency services arrive. They may be EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians), or paramedics and may work in variety of positions, like as a firefighter. It’s often their expert training that saves patients in critical, life-threatening situations.

Victoria ER wanted to honor the brave men and women who, like the emergency team at our facility, save lives in our community. Our Director of Marketing, Sheila Kilgore, dropped off treats at Victoria Fire Station 4 to show our appreciation.

“Victoria Fire Department is glad to have Victoria ER recognize our efforts to make our community safer during EMS week 2017,” said Joel Moncado, EMT-LT. “As a department, we come to work knowing that we take great satisfaction in providing the best care for our community. We appreciate the recognition because it reminds us all that we have a duty to act.”

Honoring Our Men & Women in Blue for National Police Week

In 1962, President Kennedy declared May 5th as National Police Memorial Day and the following week, May 14th through the 20th, as a time to honor our police forces.

Our team joined in with the rest of the nation, visiting and dropping off gift baskets for our local brave men and women in blue. Check out pictures from the day below.

Our Marketing Director, Sheila Kilgore, visited both the Sheriff’s Office and Victoria Police Department.

“Victoria ER pays special recognition to those law enforcements officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others,” said Sheila Kilgore. “During National Police Week Victoria ER would like to say thank you for your courage, commitment and for your sacrifice!”

Learn How Our Nurse Impacts Your Emergency Care

When thinking of your medical care, a doctor will most likely come to mind, but did you know that nurses are the primary providers of patient care?

In fact, nurses also deliver most of our long-term care. In many ways, nurses are more than medical professionals, they’re also caretakers and support systems.

During this National Nurses Week, we’re going to learn more about some of the talented nursing staff at Victoria ER with one of our own, Jenette Hill, RN. Keep reading for a deeper look as to how nurses impact your emergency care!

Q: What made you want to be a nurse?

A: My daughter gave me the idea. I lost my job and called to give her the news. She thought a minute and said, “Well, maybe this is a blessing in disguise. You always wanted to go to college. You can always support yourself with a career in nursing.” As I looked into the nursing program, I began to get more and more interested. I was accepted into the nursing program, and there began my passion for nursing. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

Q: What does a typical day at the facility look like for you?

A: Every day is different. I find that patient symptoms come in waves. For example, some days are mostly orthopedics. The patients get an x-ray, medication for pain and a splint. Other days, we see a lot of patients with gastrointestinal issues. These patients get an IV and have blood drawn for labs, fluids for rehydration and medication for nausea and pain. Sometimes those patients need an abdomen CT scan. Patients typically leave with a script for medications. Those are just a couple examples. We see patients with a wide range of medical issues. If necessary, they’re transferred to a hospital for further medical care. We do our best to ensure our patients are well taken care of and happy when they leave.

Q: How does your job impact the patient’s emergency care experience?

A: I believe my job impacts the patients emergency care in a positive manner. We don’t let our patients sit in the lobby. They are brought to a room within a few minutes of arrival. They are seen by the physician a few minutes later. Our staff is friendly, efficient and professional. Patients seem to be impressed that we can do so much for them. We have several patients that return to us because they had positive experience in our facility. They have also recommended us to their friends and coworkers, which is a testament to our patient satisfaction and care.

Q: What’s it like working at a freestanding facility, and specifically, your facility?

A: After working at Victoria ER, I will never go back to a hospital ER. I enjoy my job. I actually have the opportunity to talk with my patients, instead of running into their room, then running out. I have time to teach patients how to protect their health for the future, which is incredibly rewarding. We really value accessability in emergency care, which is why patients have the opportunity to talk to any of the staff or the doctor during their visit.

Celebrating National Doctor’s Day With Q&A

There are over 45,000 emergency physicians in the U.S., and at Victoria ER, we have the some of the best of these doctors practicing at our facility.

Since it’s National Doctor’s Day, we’re going to hear from of our physicians, Dr. Joseph Hathorn, on why he become a physician and how Victoria ER bridges the gap between a traditional emergency department and concierge-style care.

What made you want to become a physician?

When I was in high school, I had a Physics teacher encourage me to consider a career in medicine. It was always a consideration but I didn’t really seriously focus on the possibility until after that point. Having a well-respected teacher who believed in me like that had a huge effect. When I entered college I had already made my mind up that I would be pre-med. I think going into college knowing exactly what I wanted to do helped me to become impervious to the typical distractions that college kids, especially freshmen, can easily fall prey to.

So, what’s a typical day at the facility look like for you?

My day at the facility typically starts at 9am. When I first come in, I check with the outgoing physician to see if there are any patients that need to be signed out so that I can assume care. If there are patients, we will go over the patient’s history and current status in the facility and see if there are any pending test results.

After that is done, I will go to my call room and get myself ready for the day. I will usually eat breakfast and get myself settled in for the day. I will do patient callbacks, something that the oncoming physician must do, usually during the first portion of the shift.

If there is any down time or a period where there are no patients, I may try to catch up on reading or spend some time on anything that needs my immediate attention.

How does Victoria ER differ from other emergency departments?

Working at this facility is a “breath of fresh air” when compared to a typical hospital ER. Unlike at the hospital, I can see patients very quickly and give them the quality time and service that they truly deserve. Patients are very appreciative of this and we know it makes a difference in their care experience.

I also like the fact that test results come back much faster when compared to the hospital. This means our patients are on their way to feeling better, faster. Our staff is motivated by the positive patient experience and in return, they’re able to perform their jobs optimally. It is a win-win for the patients and the staff taking care of them.

Victoria ER Joins the Run Against Cancer

Every year, 12.7 million people will discover they have cancer. Of those people, over 7 million will succumb to this disease. But research suggests that nearly 40 percent of these deaths can be prevented with awareness and early detection. While deaths from cancer have gone down in the past decade, there’s still plenty we can do to educate ourselves and others about early detection, which can save lives. At Victoria ER, we decided to contribute to this cause by sponsoring the Citizens Medical Center Run Against Cancer. Keep reading to learn more key cancer facts and see pictures from the event, where some of our own staff ran.

Despite the increase in quality of life, including advanced medical care, cancer rates are rising. Experts mostly attribute the rising numbers to longevity, meaning we’re outliving our ancestors. So how can we take steps towards protecting our long-term health? Check out our tips below.

Don’t smoke. Not only does smoking significantly increase your chances of developing lung cancer, it also increases the risk of a whole host of other cancers including breast, prostate and brain.
Maintain a healthy weight. Being obese doesn’t just increase risk of cancer, it also means you’re more likely to suffer from heart disease and even stroke.
Get vaccinated. Some cancers, like certain ovarian cancers, can be prevented completely by vaccination.
Limit alcohol intake. A glass of red once in a while won’t hurt you, but if you’re used to at least one alcoholic drink a day, you may need to decrease your intake.
Research your family history. Some cancers, like breast, are more likely to occur in close relations than other cancers.
Avoid red meats. The CDC now lists red meats, like beef, hot dogs and chorizo, as carcinogenic in large amounts. Stick with white meats, like chicken or fish, and save the steaks for special occasions.
Keep regular appointments with your doctor. This is especially true as we grow older and our risk of cancer increases. Make sure you see a physician for your physical at least once a year and discuss how you can protect your longterm health.

Girl Scouts Tour Facility to Learn More About First Aid

There are nearly 2.7 million girl scouts, and a few of our own here in Victoria came to our facility to learn more about first aid and proper sanitation.

Troop #9556, led by Ashley Reyes and Tiffany Lindsey, toured the facility and learned more about handwashing, an essential part in staying healthy and warding off harmful germs. While the girl scouts were there to earn a badge, proper hand washing is something anyone can benefit from, especially during flu and cold season. Keep reading for pictures and some helpful tips from the girl scouts’ trip to Victoria ER.

Washing hands isn’t a difficult task, but it is an important one. You come into contact with thousands of germs every day and while most of these germs are harmless, some can make you sick. More serious infections, like pneumonia, influenza, and strep throat, can land you in the hospital if it’s serious enough.

Try these easy 5 steps to make sure your hands are squeaky clean, demonstrated by our own nurse, Jenette Hill.

Victoria ER Grand Opening!

Victoria ER – the 24 hour emergency clinic has always been synonymous with quality healthcare, professionalism and a dedication for instant care and personalized attention.

Over time, we’ve emerged as a leading emergency care provider in Texas, committed to providing the highest quality in emergency care, alongside quick and accurate solutions to medical emergency needs. The grand opening of this meritorious emergency care center took place on January, 28, 2016 which was held particularly for the general public to attend between 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The Grand Opening of Victoria ER – Public Event

The event, beyond our expectations, turned out to be a magnum opus and a huge success. Filled with surprises, gifts and giveaways for the attendees, the event offered a platform for people to engage. What made the grand opening of Victoria ER an unforgettable event was the LIVE radio broadcasting from KIXS 108 and KVIC.Moreover, the event offered a chance for the general public to learn about Victoria ER’s role in the community. It was indeed a great opportunity for us to educate people about our specialized staff that possesses the ability to deliver excellent patient care in a forthcoming, stress-free environment – taking healthcare standards to a new level. During the event, we announced 4 lucky winners of the HEB gift cards and 1 winner of the FitBit Flex watch. We like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the winners of the event! Gladly, we had a nice turnout for the public event and everyone seemed to have a good time.

The Grand Opening of Victoria ER – VIP Event

In addition to conducting a grand opening of Victoria ER for the general public, we held a separate grand opening for the VIPs on the same day. Commencing from 5:00 pm and concluding at 8:00 pm, the invitees of the event included community physicians, business owners and other reputed professionals in the area. The primary goal here was to connect with leading professionals in the healthcare industry. With activities planned, it served as a perfect opportunity for all attendees to engage. For both events, in addition to the interesting activities and great food, we were able to disseminate valuable information of the efforts behind Victoria ER.
